What this check covers

The 2024 Lancet Commission names 14 potentially modifiable factors associated with dementia across the life course [1][2]:

  • Less education in early life.
  • Hearing loss.
  • High LDL cholesterol.
  • High blood pressure.
  • Diabetes.
  • Obesity.
  • Depression.
  • Smoking.
  • Physical inactivity.
  • Excessive alcohol consumption.
  • Traumatic brain injury.
  • Social isolation.
  • Air pollution.
  • Untreated vision loss.

High LDL cholesterol and untreated vision loss were added in 2024. The report concerns evidence across groups of people; it is not a formula for one person’s future [1].

Not all of these are habits. Education, housing, pollution and access to care depend on circumstances and public policy. A past injury cannot be undone. The questions are our own broad prompts, not a validated clinical questionnaire.

How to use it

Answer only what you know. You can choose Not sure, Prefer not to answer, or skip any question. For medical conditions, we ask what a health professional has told you; the check does not assess symptoms, set treatment targets or make a diagnosis.

Your result groups topics you reported, topics you did not report, things you are unsure about and questions you skipped. It highlights up to 3 topics to explore, in questionnaire order, not by medical importance. It never adds factors into a health score or converts them into a risk percentage.

What you can do

Explore recommendations in the Helibrain app. The app is where you can explore supported activities and decide what fits your life. This page gives only the risk-factor facts and their sources; it does not prescribe treatment or promise disease prevention.

How comparisons work

For complete reviews only, we compare the number of topics to revisit with other players. These are Yes and Not sure answers. More topics does not mean higher risk or worse health: the factors differ, unknown answers are common, and the number is not medically weighted. We show broad bands once enough eligible first runs exist; until then we show the player count.

Your individual answers are sent to our service to make your review, but are not saved in the run record or sent to analytics. The aggregate topic count and usual test context are retained for comparisons, as described in our privacy policy. Sharing this page does not include your answers or result.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a dementia test?

No. It neither detects dementia nor estimates your chance of developing it. It also cannot rule out a health problem. A short online check cannot establish brain health.

What if I answer No to everything?

The result lists factors you did not report. It does not certify good health, make a prevention promise or imply zero risk.
