Key evidence & numbers
| Illustrative condition | Correct-response time | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Matching word and ink | 500 ms | Example baseline |
| Conflicting word and ink | 650 ms | Example incongruent condition |
| Difference | 150 ms | Incongruent minus congruent; not a diagnostic cutoff |
The original Stroop experiments used serial verbal responses, whereas online versions may use a button press. Their timings and scores are not interchangeable. Reviews document substantial variation in task versions, baselines and formulas, which is why the word Stroop alone does not identify a universal numerical scale. Stroop, 1935 Scarpina et al., 2017
What creates the conflict?
For a fluent reader, the written word can activate an incompatible response even when the instruction is to report its ink colour. MacLeod's review evaluates multiple accounts of the interference rather than reducing it to one brain area or a simple failure of willpower. The task probes a competition created by its design. MacLeod, 1991
It is important to distinguish incongruent-minus-congruent from incongruent-minus-neutral scoring. A matching word can facilitate performance, so changing the baseline changes what the difference includes. The clinical review explains that test interpretation must preserve the chosen procedure and scoring method. Scarpina et al., 2017
Why a small cost is not automatically a better mind
A difference score depends on both component conditions and their measurement error. Reliability research shows that robust average effects can coexist with noisy differences between people. An unusually small cost on a short run may reflect variability, accuracy changes or baseline differences, not exceptional general control. Hedge et al., 2017
What affects it?
What changes the size of the effect?
Response alternatives and mappings contribute to the response task. Classic choice-reaction research demonstrates that selecting among alternatives has its own latency demands. A mouse-based Stroop game and an oral paper test consequently differ in more than their surface appearance. Hick, 1952 Scarpina et al., 2017
Browser and equipment timing also contribute to absolute response times. Although comparing conditions on the same setup may remove some shared offsets, that does not prove all timing error cancels or that a difference score is reliable. Both experimental timing and psychometric work are needed for that conclusion. Anwyl-Irvine et al., 2020 Hedge et al., 2017
Sleep loss can affect attention, but the sleep-deprivation meta-analysis finds different effects across tasks and domains. It does not establish one fixed amount by which your Stroop cost should increase after a bad night. Avoid turning ordinary fluctuation into a personal health conclusion. Lim et al., 2010
What about bilingualism and practice?
The adult bilingualism meta-analysis found that small initial executive-function advantages did not remain after correction for publication bias. A person's Stroop result cannot therefore certify a bilingual advantage or disadvantage. Language familiarity remains part of understanding the actual word task, rather than a reason to assign a general cognitive label. Lehtonen et al., 2018
For personal comparisons, keep the language, response mode and scoring rules fixed, and read accuracy together with speed. Do not conclude that a smaller difference is an improvement if it comes from slower baseline responding or more errors. These are measurement cautions derived from the reviews, not a validated training recipe. Scarpina et al., 2017 Hedge et al., 2017
The realistic outcome of playing is experience with this particular conflict task. Neither its difficulty nor a high score establishes intelligence, a diagnosis or a general benefit from training. MacLeod, 1991 Scarpina et al., 2017

Stroop test
Try the Stroop test, follow the instruction about ink colour and look at correctness alongside time. It uses its own button-response procedure. The 150 ms illustration explains subtraction; it is not a target score.
Common questions
Why do I read the word automatically?
The written word can compete with the requested colour response in fluent readers. The review discusses several mechanisms behind that interference. MacLeod, 1991
Is zero interference the goal?
A near-zero difference on a short run is not automatically an ideal trait score. The baseline, accuracy and reliability matter. Hedge et al., 2017
Can I compare an oral test with a button test?
Their response requirements and scoring differ. Use norms only when they match the actual version. Scarpina et al., 2017
