Key evidence & numbers
| Scoring method in the same study | Forward mean | Backward mean |
|---|---|---|
| Traditional stopping-rule maximum | 6.35 digits | 4.61 digits |
| Maximum across the fuller test | 6.77 digits | 5.19 digits |
| Adaptive mean-span metric | 6.52 digits | 4.91 digits |
Table 6 of Woods and colleagues reports these values. The digits were presented auditorily using a computerised procedure. A visual game that displays an entire number uses different presentation and recall conditions, so these are not Helibrain score norms. Even within the study, changing the metric changes the apparent span. Woods et al., 2010
What does reversing the sequence add?
Forward recall requires retaining items and their order. Backward recall changes the required output order and can involve additional manipulation or retrieval strategies. Working-memory models distinguish temporary storage from the processes used to control or transform what is held, rather than treating every task as a direct readout of one container. Baddeley, 2012 Conway et al., 2005
This does not mean the backward-minus-forward difference is a pure quantity of executive function. The digit-span paper shows why scoring precision affects that comparison. Strategy, error patterns and the stopping rule all contribute to what the difference represents. Woods et al., 2010
Why seven is not a universal rule
Miller's classic discussion concerns information and recoding, not a guarantee that every person recalls exactly seven digits. Cowan's later review considers a smaller number of chunks under conditions that restrict rehearsal and grouping. These accounts use different constraints and units; neither provides a reason to subtract a fixed number from every forward span to predict backward span. Miller, 1956 Cowan, 2001
What affects it?
Age, education and presentation matter
The normative digit-span study examined age and education, but its adult sample is not a lifespan norm for all languages and modalities. An age difference in that sample does not validate an age-adjusted browser percentile. Auditory digits also have a sequential presentation structure that differs from seeing a whole number at once. Woods et al., 2010
Long-term knowledge can change how a string is encoded. The chunking literature describes how structure makes a sequence more compressible, and a famous intensive-practice case showed large digit-span gains using learned mnemonic organisation. Those findings do not establish an equal increase in every kind of memory. Mathy et al., 2012 Ericsson et al., 1980
How should a personal discrepancy be interpreted?
Keep both task definitions and scoring rules. A lower backward result is not, by itself, evidence of a disorder, and a larger-than-usual personal difference cannot be interpreted clinically without appropriate measurement and norms. The span-methods review stresses using well-defined procedures when drawing conclusions about working memory. Conway et al., 2005
It is also unsafe to translate either span into a particular n-back level. A meta-analysis finds that n-back and span measures are not interchangeable, despite sharing the working-memory label. Performance depends on the task's recognition, updating and recall requirements. Redick et al., 2013
For informal tracking, compare forward with forward and backward with backward under the same presentation conditions. If you change grouping strategy, note that change. A better score may reflect a more effective method for this material rather than a general expansion of memory capacity. Woods et al., 2010 Mathy et al., 2012

Number memory test
Try the number memory test as a visual recall task. Its result should be interpreted using its own instructions; it is not the auditory forward-and-backward procedure in the table. Do not use the published difference as a diagnostic target.
Common questions
Is the expected gap exactly two digits?
No. The study's traditional-metric mean difference was 1.74 digits, and other metrics gave different differences. That is not a personal rule. Woods et al., 2010
Can a longer backward span occur?
Individual results and strategies can differ. The group means do not establish a required ordering for every single administration. Woods et al., 2010
Can I convert digit span to n-back?
No validated conversion follows from these sources; the tasks are not interchangeable measures. Redick et al., 2013
