Maximum repetitive pressing rate of one button (motor speed), as delivered through the visitor's input device.
Procedure
The visitor chooses a mode, click (mouse button, or a large on-screen button on touch screens) or space (spacebar), and a duration, 5 or 10 s. The clock starts at the first press; every press is timestamped in ms since the first press until the duration ends. Key auto-repeat from a held key is ignored by the page. No practice. Leaving the tab or window during the run interrupts it.

Scoring
Primary metric: clicks per second (CPS) = counted presses / nominal duration in seconds (2 decimals); higher is faster. Presses later than the duration + 250 ms are dropped, and a press less than 10 ms after the previous counted one is dropped as switch bounce. Also reported: best second (the most presses in any 1,000 ms window), presses in each second, and the mean interval between presses. Results are kept and compared separately per input (mouse, touch, keyboard) and mode.
Valid-run rules
Press times must not go backwards. A run is flagged as a likely auto-clicker, shown but not counted, when its rate exceeds the maximum for its input, or when it is fast (over 8 presses/s, at least 20 presses) and its intervals are machine-regular (coefficient of variation under 0.05). Comparisons use first, unflagged runs per visitor with the same input and mode, and appear once 100 such runs exist.
Differences from the classic task
Clinical finger-tapping tests (Halstead, later Halstead–Reitan) use a tapping key operated with the index finger, several 10-second trials per hand with rests, and report the mean per hand. Here there is a single trial, any finger, hand or technique (including two-finger or vibration clicking), and consumer devices (mouse switch, touchscreen, keyboard).
Limitations
Device switches, touch sampling and keyboard scanning set limits and add noise; technique strongly changes the result; hand and finger are not recorded; unsupervised. Not a neurological or health measure.
